1st day of 1st Grade

Not only did Sequoia start her first day of first grade yesterday....but she lost one of her two front teeth the night before. This time the "tooth fairy" didn't forget to leave her something under her pillow.

Seriously though, my kid has officially turned into one of those "pre-awkward" stage children, with missing teeth and others coming in all funky and crooked. The other front tooth is also super loose now and ready to come out. Hahah.
Still, pretty darn cute.

About to take Sequoia to the Edgefield with [info]typsie and [info]dawningday to see Blind Pilot, Andrew Bird, and the Decemberists.

Hell Fucking Yes.

Sequoia put on her yellow Hawaiian dress to "show Andrew." Haha. Damn kids are narcissistic.
In any case...Andrew will be appreciating MY Andrew Bird t-shirt instead. Lol.

Sequoia's First Songs

These are 3 songs (really short so I put them all together in one video) that Sequoia and her music teacher have recorded recently. She was sooo excited when he gave her this cd tonight.
She's playing a little piano (the good piano is her teacher), lots of drums, some flutes and whistling, singing, and made up some crazy story about a cat in the woods or something random. Haha.

I know its just me being her mom and all, but I'm just so proud of her for how great she's been doing lately with her dancing and music and just behavior in general.

I found myself face down in a ditch
Booze in my hair
Blood in my lips
A picture of you holding a picture of me
In the pocket of my blue jeans

Still don't know what love means
Still don't know what love means

Alright, so I gotta be one of THOSE moms' right now. Sequoia is the 4th from the left in this video. Seriously though...even though the tall girl next to her was way too close and kept bumping her, she was totally on beat the entire time, and remembered every step.
I'm so proud of her. :D

Bonnaroo 2009

  • Jun. 9th, 2009 at 9:42 AM

Tomorrow I leave for Bonnaroo. Holy fucking shit balls. I'm seriously not trying to rub it in my friends faces, so I'm sorry if you're sick of hearing me talk about this festival.

It's been a bitch to plan, but it's finally here. This is the largest festival in the US, and one that I've wanted to see since it's start nearly 10 years ago. I don't know what it is about listening to music in a crowd of thousands, but there is something very powerful and almost spiritual about it. Most people wouldn't spend all of their vacation money or time traveling across the country to camp with a hundred thousand people on a humid Tennessee farm...but music is my life, so this means everything to me.

So here are my TOP 10 bands I'm stoked to see at Roo (in the order of which I'll see them)

1. Gomez:
Not many know this band, but they're fucking awesome. They have two lead singers, with very different styles. But do a great job of mixing rock with folk, bluegrass and indie.

2. Santogold:
There is something about dancing to a hip hop, reggae, indie star from Brooklyn that is so appealing to me.

3. Grizzly Bear:
Another great new indie, folky, and sometimes bluesy band that I've been digging on for a while.

4. Lucinda Williams:
She's so iconic for me. She's an amazing song writer, and really carved out her own niche in the folky, bluesy, rocky-woman genre.

5. Ani Difranco:
Fuckety fuck yes. I've already seen Ani 3 times, but she's still one of the BEST performances I've ever seen in my life. She's charming, funny, has a sweet back up band, and can rock the fuck out, or make you cry. I love you Ani <3

6. Beastie Boys:
God I'm so exicted to see them. I last saw them at the Tibetan Freedom Concert in 1996. Such great performers. And I know hearing some of their songs will totally remind me of HS. Haha.

7. David Bryne:
Who doesn't like the Talking Heads? Well I do, and I love him. He's another one of those guys for me like Morrissey, who is just iconic in their own right for being so successful with music for so long.

8. Bon Iver:
Mmm. I love love love love love them. This might possibly be the one I'm most excited for!

9. Phish:
If you're not into Jam bands...then you would hate Phish. Fortunately, I have a hard on for jam bands, so I'm pumped for 2 nights of Phish!!!

10: Erykah Badu:
She is one of my biggest inspirations as a singer. I am so excited to see her. She's an amazing performer and she's just such a cool fucking chic. I'm even missing Andrew Bird to see her!!!

Other Honorable Mentions:
- Decemberists
- Mars Volta
- Bruce Springsteen
- Jenny Lewis (amazing)
- Elvis Costello
- NIN
- Band of Horses
- Neko Case
- Brett Dennen
- Girl Talk
- Moe
- Wailing Souls

So I'll do a full recap of my stripper mayhem weekend later, but I just had to say this:

Last night at [info]bellybalt s surprise party, [info]katlyn  gave me about the nicest complement ever and it almost made me cry. I can't remember exactly what she said, but it was something to the extent of "you are one of those people with a shining light in them, that's so down to earth and doesn't need to get caught up in superficiality."
I am probably the worst person in the world when it comes to complements, because I can never take them. Even talking about it seems weird to me now. BUT...I just needed to acknowledge the fact that this meant so much to me. Mostly because she followed it up by saying "the problem with ALL of our friends is that we're so fucking hard on ourselves." This is so true too. We got into an even further discussion of how there are things each of us would like to change about ourselves, and how none of us is very good at just being totally ok with who we are. Which turned into a whole other topic completely.

My point is....THANK YOU [info]katlyn for making me feel really special in that moment. Life has been hard the last couple months, and hearing something like that from a wonderful friend truly makes all my worries melt away for a night.

I love you guys. <3

Bluegrass Song

Sorry for so many posts today.

So last night I finally finished recording the backup vocals for a local musician here who it putting out his EP, then his full record in October. I got a little excited when he showed me the printed EP leaflet with my name on the back. I think it's the first time I'll have my name officially "on" something. Kinda cool. He's going to send me the final album mixed version next week. I actually don't like the song much, but I think I did a decent job on the backups. He was very impressed which is really all that matters, and offered to pay me. I'm so not in it for the money at this point though, and just feel like the experience of studio work alone is the most important thing for me.
But he gave me a very nice complement in saying that I was the best and most effecient singer he had ever recorded with. Could mean he's recorded with terrible singers. Haha. But it was nice.

This is my latest song with Kyle though. Something I wrote which I kinda liked. And...my first ever bluegrassy-ish song.
Eventually Kyle will be doing all the harmonies when it's re-recorded, in the chorus. But it was difficult for him to play the guitar, and think about the harmonies vs lead vocals.
This song makes me laugh a little, since I talk about "getting laid" in it. :D  Haha.

More new songs

So here is another new one I finished yesterday.
Kyle and I spent 7 hours writing/practicing/and recording yesterday. We have two new songs (so thats 6 total originals now which I'm stoked about). I orginally sang this in a low alto tone, but it was hard for me to project. Kyle really liked the idea of me singing it super high...so here is my funny attempt at a high falsetto range on the verses.

We've also decided this is a total stoner song. Hahaha. Again, don't pay too much to recording quality as all of these will be re-recorded anyway.

Hungover.
Haha.

Yesterday was good. Mystery Trip with the Doomster gang, then good  food, then Rose Parade, then booze (way too much of it for me...never mix alcohols), then pukie time. Yes...that's right. I was THAT girl who puked. Fuckin awesome. Not really. I don't think I've been that girl for a long time. Lol.
Hope I didn't wake anyone up crashing at your place [info]typsie . I planned to drive home but obviously I was in no state of mind to do much of anything.

Off to music practice now! Haha. We'll see how well that goes. ;)

Another New Song

I probably shouldn't post every single song I work on, but I like this one. So fuck it.
Also, [info]typsie has inspired me to take a dabble at home recording. So I went mic shopping today, and bought a usb mic so that I can record demo vocals over projects that I'm working on with other musicians, and have already started messing with this free program she turned me onto.

Here is one in a string of many new songs I've been working on for a collaborative project with a guitar player here. The lyrics aren't anything stunning, and vocals need some work (as well as adding a guitar solo and some harmonies eventually). I like the idea of having these recordings to look back on though, and know that I've grown as a musician.

And I'll be HERE!!!!!!! :D

Fuck I can't wait. I need a vacation from my life right now, and this will be my first time ever visiting the South in any way.
My Virgo planning is in full force.
Let the countdown begin.

Notice the RV's parked in this pic in the top right....as well as the mass camping in the top left?....Now notice the two main stages with thousands of people....yeah....that's like over a mile from each other. Basically...once you go in, you pretty much don't go back to your camp spot until 4:00am. This is definitely not a festival for the weak of heart.

A new Song

  • May. 24th, 2009 at 8:31 AM
sad fairy
So yesterday was a little frustrating with the sore throat, but I was still able to accomplish a lot in two music practices/recordings.
The first gig with the band didn't go as well as I would have liked, but I'm also my harshest critic, so it probably went better than I think it did.

My second practice on the other hand, I was very happy and excited about. Kyle has been such a pleasure to work with, especially comparing him to all the other flaky musicians who didn't work out. He's a Virgo...maybe that's the key. Haha. In any case, we're pretty much writing/recording at least 1 if not 2 songs a week now. The goal is to write/record as much as possible, weed out the crap, keep the good stuff, and professionally record. At this point its all very bare bones recording and playing. Pretty much just him, me, and a guitar. I actually love the intimacy of a sound like that for myself. Because it's always something that can be added to...but no matter what, we know we can perform with just the two of us.

Soooo...I'm posting a new song I wrote this week. I don't do this often, as I'm such a perfectionist with my own music that I'm always super embarrassed to show unfinished products to my friends. But I've had more than a few friends ask me what I'm working on...so I'll share a little.

This song is sort of just a giant metaphor, but I kinda dig the simplicity. Eventually...it will be re-recorded, have some harmonies added, etc, etc, etc. If it sounds like crap...yeah I know what needs to be done to it. Haha. My voice isn't where I wanted it yesterday, but oh well. This is purely for sample purposes as it was recorded live in one take.

You can dowload it from this link.

If you hate it...just keep your mouth shut. Haha. I don't have the ego I need to take a whole bunch of harshness right now. Lol.

Yes.....this is JUST a girl event I'm sorry guys. We love you...but sometimes we need to dress like sluts and go dancing. This is one of those times.

Sooooo......[info]dark_knightly and I were talking a while back about getting all our cute clothes together one night (it originally started with talk of cute summer dresses...but quickly moved to whore type clothing), getting dressed up together, and going out dancing with a bunch of us ladies.
What better excuse do you need to dress like a slut with a bunch of other ladies? I can't think of any.

The summer is quickly filling up and getting scheduled out. So I'm taking a poll. Would any of you be able to come on these dates?
I can really only do Sat nights unfortunately, and a few are taken up already. These are the 3 dates that work for me, and that we don't have Doomsters events yet. Let me know when you can. Love you ladies. ♥
